According to the plan of works for exploration as approved by the ISA Council in 1997, the Interoceanmetal activities are focused on geological exploration, environmental research and the development of nodule mining, transport and processing technology. In 2001 the IOM was the first international organization to be awarded exploration contract by the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The organization obtained the exclusive right to explore and develop a commercial mining project in the granted area of 75,000 km2, located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. In 2022, the IOM and the ISA signed the Agreement on the extension of the contract for exploration for polymetallic nodules for the period of 5 years.
