Giant Polymetallic Nodule

Szczecin (Poland) During the IOM-2024 scientific expedition, an extremely large polymetallic nodule was recovered from the seabed. It is probably the largest nodule found in the IOM exploration area. The specimen was found in a box-corer sample at station BC_3710P in the Preservation Reference Zone. The concretion measured 33 x 21 x 17 cm immediately after removal from the corer and weighed 6.5 kg (wet). In terms of shape, it is an ellipsoidal morphotype, probably of combined hydrogenetic-diagenetic origin. The sample was prepared for processing and sectioned at the Natural Science Education and Research Centre at the University of Szczecin, Poland, and will be further analyzed in laboratories with the aim of thoroughly determining its chemical and mineralogical composition.
