Szczecin (Poland) Trainees from developing countries, Ms. Thiwaporn Phonsit (Thailand) and Mr. Jonathan Jonah (Nigeria), have successfully completed the comprehensive six weeks multidisciplinary training in the field of polymetallic nodules project management, organized by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization as part of the ISA training programme.
Ms. Thiwaporn Phonsit and Mr. Jonathan Jonah took part in lectures, seminars, laboratory classes, hands-on exercises and a sampling cruise, exploring the topics of deep-seabed mining legal framework, exploration activities, environmental research, economic cycle and metallurgical processing. The programme was organized in cooperation with the Natural Sciences Education and Research Centre, University of Szczecin (Poland), the Polish Geological Institute – the National Research Institute in Szczecin (Poland) and the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague (Czech Republic).
The Interoceanmetal Joint Organization 2019 Training Programme is a part of the International Seabed Authority activities to comply with articles 143 and 144 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to promote marine scientific research in the Area and to encourage capacity building of developing countries in deep sea research and technology. IOM provides training opportunities for trainees from developing countries in order to transfer knowledge and expertise in deep-sea mining.
